July – August 2004

“Generosity brings joy; honesty brings peace.”

SUNDAY PROGRAMS

July 11 – METAPHYSICS.   What does Metaphysics mean to you?  The voyage of Chi-ops—a ship full of people traveling to Greece, Egypt, Israel and Turkey, with a staff from UCLA.  All were on board with an interest in the Metaphysics of different religions.  Beth Perkins will share her experience from this trip.  Discussion of Metaphysics to follow.  Beth will moderate.

July 18 - HAPPY SECULAR HUMANISM!   Did you know that July 18 is Secular Humanism Day?  It’s a day to celebrate all life-affirming humanist, rationalist, and scientific belief systems.  Let’s celebrate together!  Rev. Teri Masters, Interfaith Minister, Hospice Chaplain, and 24 year UU will speak to us today.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

July 25 - ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF SBUF (formerly known as the annual dinner).  Join together this year for BRUNCH at the Alpine Village Inn, at 833 W. Torrance Blvd., in Torrance. Come together at 11:00 a.m.  The cost is $l4 per person.  Please call Penny at to make a reservation and send a check to her, but made out to South Bay Unitarian Fellowship.  No business today; -- just food, fellowship and fun.  There will be NO MEETING AT MATHEWS COTTAGE today.

August 1 - HEAL THE BAY.   Our guest speaker from this non-profit environmental group will talk about the causes and consequences of marine pollution and what we can all do about it.  Moderator:  Linda Klein.

August 8 - LEARNING TO LET GO   We grow attached to many things, people, and activities that we enjoy, but the Buddha teaches that such attachment causes suffering.  Can we strike a balance between the austere path of a monk and the self-indulgence that pop culture encourages?  How do we get past the pain when we have no choice but to let go?  Bill Nunan will present the program and will moderate.

August 15 - “THE JESUS FACTOR”.   Frontline aired this documentary on President Bush’s Fundamentalist background and its influence on his presidency.  Come watch portions of this program with discussion to follow.  Bob Johnson will moderate this morning.

August 22 - BEING LIBERAL IN AN ILLIBERAL AGE.   In an era a resurgent conservatism and Bible-thumping fundamentalism, religious liberals can feel overwhelmed.  Come share in a reaffirmation of why we chose our path, and share strategies for countering the influence of the right.  Carol Simpson will lead this discussion and will moderate.

August 29 - HOW NOT TO POSE ENEMIES.   Simone Maud’hui currently teaches classes on growth of our Spiritual Being.  She will talk about the underlying oneness of the earth and the great design of the universe among the chaos of our world.  Marilyn Doty will moderate today.

                                        ****************************

Sharon Spurlock was married on May 29, 2004, to Edward Purcell.  Their address as Mr. and Mrs. Purcell is 5850 Belt Line Road, Apt. 2105, Dallas, Texas 75254.

The following is from the announcement of their wedding:

Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter to the other.

Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other.

Now there is no loneliness for you.

Now you are two persons, but there only one life before you.

Go now to your dwelling place, to enter into the days of your togetherness,

And may your days be good, and long together.

                                       Apache prayer of benediction
