May 2019 Newsletter

Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never  been loosened or fertilized by education; they grow there, firm as weeds among rocks.”   Charlotte Bronte

                                               SUNDAY PROGRAMS

May 5 – DEALING WITH TODAY.  UU Rev. Jon Dobrer, a Starr King and Theological Union graduate, served the UU Church in Fullerton from 1993-2014.  Jon continues teaching, doing columns for newsgroups, newspapers and writing about our world.  We welcome Jon again. Penny will moderate.

May 12 “the king is not the law, the law is king” Thomas Paine     A program inspired by the commentators and guests on MSNBC, especially host Chris Hayes and the criminal activity of #45.

May 19 – The US is exceptional in its inequality.  The World Happiness report of 156 countries noted that the "sociopolitical system" in the U.S. produces greater income inequality than other rich countries."  We have dropped to 18 in happiness.  This deep-seated inequality is evident with our higher rates of health and social problems and in our high poverty rate and wage stagnation.  It stays with us while unemployment drops and the rich get richer.   Let’s discuss what can be done.

May 26 –  A Functional Approach to the Mind a selection from the “The Philosophy of Consciousness” DVD series.  Michael Bastone is providing us with the DVD.
